The problem with success is that it raises the bar.
That is, it is raising my own bar. Oh, I managed to pull off that... let's see what I can really do now. Thank you all for a great weekend. There are some mighty talented riders here. Strong and dedicated. Damn fine riding in Traffic Jam this past Saturday. A few new faces and a few older faces. Wow can they rip it up. XC race this morning was killer. I do believe that it's a record for turn out. This year's races are proving to be a super relaxed vibe. Come, race, chill, go home. What a way to spend Father's day.
Up next (not my event) is Round the Mountain race in Kimbo. These guys and gals are killin' it with the organization. You can be sure that we'll be taking a few pages from their book for the Six In The Stix. Congratulations Cranbrook and Kimberley for putting yourselves on the map this year. It's been excellent so far and it's just June. Holy crap.
Back to the bit about raising the bar... We did two events this weekend. Traffic Jam and The Father's Day Fiver. We lived through it. No injuries, just a couple of flats. So naturally (for me, anyway,) I've decided to boost it to 3 event this coming year. Start getting stoked for SIX IN THE BRIX. 6 km crit race in downtown Cranbrook on a 300m short track. We're going to have a roadie devision and a mtb devision. BMXers will be part of the MTB (given how well our BMXer Ramius did in the Traffic Jam). So that's next year. BUT. I want a crit now. NOW. So, it may happen that the next Cranberley Fiver is a crit race. I have to take a look at our terrain and see if I can find a decent spot to pull it off. Interest?

Tuesday Nights at 7pm. Women's Ride. No boys, ever. Show up at the shop to get your name in our draw.

Thursday Nights at 7pm. Co-ed Ride. Boys and girls on this ride. It's more on the agressive side of things, but we won't leave you behind. Meet at the shop to get your name in the draw.

The draw? Bake Hill Dental is sponsoring a draw along with us to promote riding in this area. Every time you show up for a group ride or take part in one of our races, you will get your name entered. On October 9th at the Six In The Stix 6 Hour Enduro, we will draw a name. This lucky person will win upwards of 2000 bucks towards a 2012 bike from us. Couple rules... Baker Hill dental employees and familys are not allowed to enter. Favorit Cycles employees and families are not allowed to enter. You HAVE to show up at the shop for group rides to get entered. You HAVE to be at the Six in The Stix to claim your prize.

Spring has come like a lion. A slow, wet and cold lion. It hasn't sprung, it's more just made it in for the seasonal roll-call and then wandered off to greener pastures to lick its wounded pride. Summer seems to be playing the one-up game with spring and tossed us a bit of snow up top of South Baker just in time for this past weekend's xc race. Trails that have been dry for ages were wet again. Snow. In May.

It's June now. All it took was a new paragraph. Above was last month and this is June. So far, June has been excellent. Good ride today in the trees on the big wheels. There was an excellent melt down by an adult customer today. Thanks for the entertainment. Called me every name in the book and a few more. Mostly he called me a punk. Which is funny.... I always thought it was just a joke that old people called young people punks. Don't old people know that most young people take it as a compliment? I've always called the young guys coming in the shop punks because it's funny. Anyway, this fellow promised a lot of nasty stuff against me and for some reason went on about being retired and not needing the money. I suspect that he was refering to me losing him as a customer... but I can't be sure. To top it all off he huffed and puffed and blew my house down. Well, not really, but he said I was lucky that he didn't wind up and smack me. I don't think he said smack... it was more similar to crush, or punch or smash. He was breathing pretty heavy by that point. Other than the offer to hit me, he plans to take this to the newspaper. So keep your eyes on the 'Bad Business of the Week' column, we'll be there front and center. Favorit Cycles... pissing people off since December 1st, 2007. Good night Mr. Angry Pants. Sweet dreams.

We had a race this past weekend that was a success. Thanks to the proper government bodies for allowing that. We appreciate it. Race attendance was up from The Mother's day race by two entrance. Excellent turn out. Kimberley was well represented by several new faces. Good to have reps from Kootenay Cycle Works (previously knowns as Poser Sports.) Johnny Dunbar took the win this time out, but he had to work for it. Ryan Hamilton was hot on his tail for both laps and finished less than 2 minutes behind. Out of nowhere came Jason Cox for 3rd place just behind Ryan. Gord Haine was 4th with an astonishing time. Michelle Dunbar took the lady's 2 lap race. Lots of other people did really well, but I haven't got the results here right now, so that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Up next is Traffic Jam. More to come on that. XC Race on June 19th at Eager. Be there or don't be there. That's the question. Lisa, if you're reading, the paper work is on it's way. 5 bucks to get in. 3 laps this time folks. Time to step it up.

Summer?
Perhaps, but let's not count our chickens just yet. There was still frost on the car this morning at 8 as I left for the morning romp in the bushes. It was cold. Damn cold. Still a bunch of snow buried in the far off reaches of what really isn't the Community Forest, but more or less is reffered to AS the Community Forest. Great ride, by the way. Have you been out?
The future looks bright. Hopefully that's what the sun will do for us, but that's not what I'm talking about. Legit (the word,) is awful. Most people can't say it without someone hating them for putting that song in their head. It's also got a negative vibe. Going legit is usually a recipe for stopping the fun, putting away the booze and following the rules. So much so that it could cause you to actually disappear forever. However remotely far off or daunting, going legit seems to have a few positive aspects. Following the rules generally does not result in you going to jail... other than in Nelson when we did follow the rules and DID go to jail. In true tangent form, congratulations to the polive everywhere for finding the crooks who actually DID do the crime. Back to the topic. Government groups don't fuck around. We've been dealing with a particular government body and a particular lady within said group who have been quite nice (tolerant) and very helpful.
Why? Because we love you. Most of you folks like what we (as a shop) do. We throw races, we have events, we have been known to participate in a bit of trail building and we stick our necks out to have fun on bikes. Eventually all this tom foolerly gets noticed by the proper people and begins the long process of getting processed and channeled through the proper channels. As it sits right now, if we want to continue down this beautiful path, we must pay the piper. Actually, there's no piper and we don't have to pay him. What there is, is a good solid list of rules and regulations and procedures.
So i suspect that you may be asking why I (of all people) have all of a sudden become interested in following anyone's rules and going legit with anything. Truthfully, and to begin with, I haven't got any choice. Things got big enough to require it. But a little futher into I've discovered that there is a lot more to be accomplished by doing this than to continue on in some rogue manner skirting the rules and avoiding the authorities. as much fun as that is...
Ramble ramble... get to the point.
All of our xc races are now put through an approval process that is closely monitored by the government and atleast one related society. We have hoops to jump through and rules we must follow to assure that things are done right. All of this (which causes you, the participant no extra work) assures everyone involved that our recreation areas will remain in great shape for more future events. Despite what you may (or may not think), these requirements and rules are very reasonable. RESPONSIBILITY. Oh my goodness, can we handle it.
Sunday, May 8th is our first xc race of the year. It takes place at Eager Hills at the Fraggle Rock parking lot at 10 am. This race is brought to you by Favorit Cycles... and approved by both the government recreation authority and the Cranbrook Community Forest Society. This is a big thing. This is also a test. We've got 5 more races planned before the Six In The Sticks and we will be able to do them if we all do our part and take responsibility.
The race will proceed in the same manner as last year. Infact, you won't be able to tell the difference. Participate in the manner that you have in the past and we'll be in great shape.
Show 'em you're a tiger. Show 'em what you can do.
Join the Community Forest Society. It's not what the forest can do for you, it's what you can do for the forest. Come see me at the shop for details. The Society is under new management. Time to show our interest. I WILL be calling on you cyclists to help with any work bees that come up. Please participate.

The Anomaly's Of Spring

Woo Hoo! It's 2011 and we didn't get the chance to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, so here it is, better late then never.

It's nearly riding season. You know how we know? Because Pedal N Pints are happening every Thursday night leaving from the shop at 6pm. Another reason it's almost riding season is because as I look out the window, it is raining. And this means the rain will melt the snow. This is good.

Favorit has a whack load of stuff going on in 2011. You should come in the shop sometime and talk about it, or I can write it here and you can read about it. Cool.

For 2011, group rides are key. Get out riding with people, it's a good time and there are people to talk to, and try to beat up the hill. We have a couple of group rides going on throughout the year, starting when the weather gets nice and the trails are clear.

FWO - For Women Only - Ladies rides are happening and they are going to be awesome. Tuesday nights they will be happening, starting at 7pm and leaving from the shop. If the meeting point (the shop) ever changes, we will post it. It might start wherever the ladies will be riding, such as the Community Forest. Just give us a call and we'll fill you in. 250-489-3532. All levels of riding are welcome. Come in and talk to us and we can introduce you to some of the ladies that will be participating.

PEDAL N PINT (Co-Ed group ride) - This event will be happening Thursday nights starting at 7pm from the shop. Right now, March 9th, we are leaving at 6pm just to catch some light hours. We go for a Pedal for a bit, then we Pint for a bit at the local watering hole. It's a good time, you should come out for one. They are happening as we speak! Don't worry about not getting into the bar if your not of age, you can definately still come on the ride.

SIX IN THE STIX - AWESOME! Last years event saw 47 of the areas toughest riders battling it out for the 6 hour enduro during Turkey weekend of October. You thought that was a good time? This year is going to be bigger, badder, and better. New course, more prizes, and more fun! It's set up for Turkey weekend again this year. Come out and give it your all to try to claim the Fastest Overall title, or to have a really great time!

TRAFFIC JAM - Again, bigger and better is the name of the game for this years event. It will be a lot more rider friendly this year. It will be happening Saturday, June 18th during Sam Steele Days. Come in to the shop for more info, and to see the model that was created of the course. Yeah, we had some time on our hands.

CRANBERLEY FIVER XC RACES - You wanted XC races? We got 'em! We have one going on every month for the summer. Yeah, good times. The first one is on Sunday, April 17th. 5 bucks. That's it. Try your hand at an XC race, or come out and support your local racers. For more info: 250-489-3532.

Sooooooo....what's new in the shop you ask? We'll there is a bunch of stuff. For one there are a bunch of brand spankin new 2011's in the shop from Giant, Trek, and Opus. Another new thing is that we got a new counter top on the desk. It's pretty sick. And one last thing that is new, James is munchin on oriental trail mix, and is now applying a band-aid because the oriental trail mix got out of hand.

Monster Monday

So. Here we are. It's Monday. Everyone is lacking energy from the shenanigans that happened on the weekend. Solution? Probably not Monster but on this particular Monday, it is in fact Monster. Zing.

Enough about lacking energy. It's right smack dab in the middle of biking season and lacking energy is the last thing that you need. Get on your bike. I recently did, for three days in a row. It was called the Transrockies Challenge. This year I tackled the TR3. The three day event of it's bigger sister, the Transrockies seven day challenge.

This years TR3 brought competitors from Fernie to Etherington Camp in the Kananaskis area of Alberta. Along with myself came Ian Jones, a friend and fellow biker, who kicked ass. Let me tell you, this was INTENSE. Many people ride a lot of Km in one day, but not a lot of people ride a lot of Km in one day with hundreds of other riders in a competition. From warm sunny days to cold, rainy, muddy days the TR3 had it all. I thought it was a biking event but there was tons of other ways to reach the end of each day. Wading through rivers, hiking between thick patches of alder up crazy climbs. It was awesome. Wicked scene. So many cool people. You should try it. Best three riding days of my life. Thank you Transrockies.

You like racing? No? Well you'll like this! A mostly for fun cross cuntry race Sunday, August 29th at 11am starting at the Eager Hills Parking lot just off the highway by Fraggle Rock. Three categories - Mens, Womens, and Kids. Two laps for the men and women, laps are 8.5Km long. Did I mention BARBEQUE! Come out, bring your friends.

Enduro anyone? Favorit is setting up a 6 hours of cross country mayhem enduro taking place Sunday, October 10th called SIX IN THE STICKS. It will start in the College of the Rockies parking lot and continue through the Community Forest. It's going to be big. Come talk to anyone in the shop if you have any ideas or suggestions on the enduro. Sign up early, it's bound to sell out quick!

So to sum it up - I recently got a new job, participated in a wicked race, stoked on the races to come in the near future, and love riding my bike. Life is good.

Gooe evening and welcome to the show.
It is currently May 17th, 2010. All is well in Cranbrook.

Tuesday is women's group ride night. It's an ALL ABILITIES ride. We were going to go with the beginner/intermediate, but no one showed up. All you ladies, come out and ride. Meet at the shop at 7pm on Tuesday nights.

Last week's co-ed Wednesday ride was a huge success. Let's do it up again. 7pm at the shop on Wednesday night.

Tuesday night of this week is trail building night. Meet at the shop at 6pm or so and we'll get going. On the agenda is the race course. Bring a rake and some dynamite.

XC race is June 6th on Sunday. Map soooon. Race starts at 10am.

Big News?

Folks. Riding season is well upon us.

My biggest apologies for shitting the bed on the first XC ride a few weeks ago. We tried to hold a race in a conservation area... and naturally a few people had issues with that. In my defense, we were looking for approval... we weren't just going to do it without permission. Or maybe we were. Who knows.

The races are coming. We need help cutting a new course in a new secret remote location. Be at the shop this Thursday (May 13th) at 6pm and we'll head out to get some work done. Bring any tools you have... especially gas powered weed whackers. Let's cut us some trail. For those of you who don't approve of cutting trail, show some sack and come talk to me about it. Part of having beliefs and morals is the ability to defend them and talk about them in an adult manner. Anyone who wants to throw mud from a safe distance... whatever.

I think we can have a race in about 3 weeks.

New Year, New Location, New Thoughts

Welcome to 2010. No more of that pesky 2009.

As most of you know, we've got a new location. It's purple. And it's great. We like it and we'll be there for some time to come. I can't really imaging a location that I'd rather be in. Big old thanks to everyone who helped us through the winter. It's nice to see how the sport continues despite the cold. Not that it's really that cold. Spring has hit us and the desire to ride bikes is rocketing. The talk of the season is definately the new Rails to Trails pathway. So far as I know, it's not named yet. I know that a good number of you have riden the trail already. I suspect we'll have some sort of grand opening (by we, I mean the two cites,) in the spring to get things rolling. It'll be sweet. Probably the most pleasing thing so far this season is the number of people getting back into riding after many of years away from the sport. I can't even begin to imagine the value one would put this trail system... and I don't mean money. A 25 km (or so) length trail with only 3 (so far as I know) road crossings. Double that to get home and you've got an absolutely amazing day of riding for any level or style of rider. We've got a few ideas for events involving this great strip of asphalt and we'll let that cat out of the bag soon enough.

Events.
We've got a truck load of events for you all this season. Another few weeks and I'll post the calendar. What we're thinking is this:
- XC races once a month
- Traffic Jam contest twice this summer
- Group Rides each week for beginner women's co-ed and the Thursday night Pedal N Pint
- Shuttles for the DH folks
- Tooney Races for the DH folks
- Trail maintainance and building days
- Saturday morning repair seminars for basic bike fixing stuff
- Road time trials
And the list goes on. Something for everyone.

With it being spring and all, it's best that we all act on the better side of responsible. Take care of the trails. Our spring ruts will be with us for many months to come. Tread lightly and tread smartly. Going around a puddle makes the trail wider and going through it makes it deeper. Make a judgement and do the least damage that you can.

Otherwise, ride your bike.

Wow, it's almost October. Infact, it's pretty much October.
On October 1st, we get the keys to the new store. It's much bigger than our current lodgings and in a much better location. I'm sure you won't have too much trouble finding it. It's very purple and very green. I do believe it's 12 - 9th Avenue South. Just off Baker. Anyway, we get the keys and we get to start the process of renovating over again. No worries, this time it's gonna be quick and easy. Thanks to everyone who has offered to help... it's like you guys like us. For this we are greatful and remain your loyal bicycle servants. So, stay tuned for more news on the new store front... ha ha... get it 'store front!' That's what us intlecktuals like to call a play on words. Clang.
We're also coming up on an aniversary here folks. You folks have kept us around for almost 2 years. December 1st is the 2 year mark. Can you believe it? We'll have a new sign, but it'll be the same shop with the same attitude and same poor spelling.
Traffic Jam 2009 was kick ass to say the least. It's going to be bigger in the future, but that's the future. Right now, let's discuss the present... or the past now, because it happened on the 27th.. a couple days ago. Two lanes of wooden stunts... racing... prizes and loud music. There was also some dork with a microphone. Spectacular. No major injuries and no complaints... that I've heard yet. As far as I can tell, it was great. Let's leave it at that. 13 Things That You May or May Not Know.

1. The Cranbrook Fiver is an XC race and it's happening on the 13th of September. Meet us at 10am at the first parking lot on Mt. Baker Road... that's 2nd street... under the power lines and turn left into the parking lot. Two divisions... boys and girls. 5 bucks to get into the race and the winner will take half of that home. The rest goes to the next race... which has not been planned yet. The course is 19.2 km and has 2050 feet of climbing. Yes, the Roller Coster (upper and lower) are part of the course. Yes, the course ends on an up hill. Call the shop for more details.

2. Traffic Jam 2009 is on it's way. It's a side by side speed trials type race that should be quite fun. September 27th is the date. We're hoping ot have in on 10th Ave between Baker and 1st Street south. More details in a few days.

3. We are moving. To the old Vibe building on 9th. Almost 3 times the space to do what we do.

4. Everything is on sale so we don't have to move it. Come see what we've got.

5. It is night riding season and lights are actually somewhat affordable.. especially when they can make your xc and dh seasons longer.

6. We will soon have Cranbrook's first indoor pump track.

7. Favorit Cycles sponsors a local young man in demolition derbies. Come see the action this weekend in Fernie. Sunday at noon at the rodeo grounds.

Canyon Blaster.

Canyon Blaster is a rediculous name... just like most names. And because of that, it's a perfect name. Our trail system is growing. Canyon Blaster takes you from the stunts on Galaxy to the top of the Tarvy Wolfganger and avoids the ride on the road. From there you can take the Canyon Connector to Fan Belt, or cruise on down the path through the Wolfganger.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about... you arn't riding with us enough.

August and Everything After

It's August. And chances are, you aren't reading this because no one knows about this here blog. If you are reading this, you may have stumbled in looking for Mount Rushmore or something. Anyway, here you are and here I am.
It's August. The riding season is in full swing... or should be. Where are all the riders this year? Are they golfing? Are they riding secret trails? Are they looking up porn on the interweb? Do you currently have another window open with porn in it? Why aren't you riding your bike?
It's August. Group rides shit the bed this year. After 3 or 4 attempts and only 3 or 4 riders showing up, we sorta gave up. I apologize for that. It's not like us to just give up. But there's a new group ride of sorts going on. We're borrowing a name from a guy. He doesn't live here, but it's his name and we're borrowing it. It's called the Pedal N Pint. Yes, we ride bikes and then we have a beer, or what ever you want. It happens every Thursday night at 7pm. When it gets too dark in the fall, bring your lights. The pedal N Pint. Don't forget. This Thursday night.
It's August and the shuttle trails are super. Come see us about a shuttle. New stunts are going up quickly and several new trails have been blazed. All of them are named other than the new one that Doug hasn't named yet. I suggest Audience Chamber. It's his call.
It's August, Fernie is open. Pano is open and most importanly, Golden is open.
It's August and due to a break down in communications with out customers, it's likely that I'll be back on facebook in the near future. If everyone took one minute away from facebook everytime they sat down and saved them up... in a few days you'd have time for a ride. Maybe a ride on Thursday night at the Pedal N Pint?

Summer is upon us. I suspect that a great many of you have out riding bikes. This is a good thing. Less TV is watched when more riding is done. There is a lot of stuff going on this summer that involves riding bikes. In fact, most of the stuff I'm taking about pretty much only involves riding bikes. It might even be safe to say that most of anything that is involved with my life also involves bikes.

It's 9:43pm and that's pretty much all I have to say. I rode my bike today and I'm glad I did. I used to count the days-in-a-row that I did ride a bike... now that idea seems a bit silly. I think I may have gone 3 days without riding a bike in the last few months.

I have, with this post... (is it called a post?) slayed my blogging cherry. Not once previous to this momentus occasion have I blogged. I have read blogs, I have laughed out loud at blogs, but I have not ever created a blog with the small and somewhat unrealistic expectation that someone will actually put the time into reading it. But here you are. Why aren't you out riding your bike?

So, anyway. Welcome to the Favorit Cycles Blog. I guess that it's not surprising that most people pronounce our name wrong. It is FAV-RIT not favourite. The 'o' is silent and there is no 'e'. I know that that is against the rules of the English language, but that's the way it is.

We are a bike shop. What a surprise. We sell and fix bikes. We also sell stuff that makes riding bikes more enjoyable. Pretty much anything that you can dream up, we can get for you. we build and maintain trails. We have group rides. We have free repair sessions on Saturday mornings at 11am.
